How it works

Three steps. Under 60 seconds to your first answer. Then a coach for everything that follows.

What happens when you upload your bill?

1

Upload your bill (30 seconds)

Take a photo, upload a PDF, or paste a screenshot. Any major Australian retailer in the National Electricity Market. BillDecoder reads the bill — every line, including the ones most people never get to.

2

Get your free verdict (under 60 seconds)

BillDecoder analyses your bill against current plan data for your distribution zone. You find out whether you're overpaying, paying a fair rate, or already on a competitive plan. Free. No sign-up. No credit card.

The verdict tells you what's happening — your tariff type, your daily usage, your annual cost, and where the gaps are.

3

Your Coach takes over ($29)

This is where the work happens. Your Coach knows everything in your bill and works through every saving path with you — in the order that makes the most difference for your specific situation.

For most households, that means:

  • First:Plan comparison — is there a cheaper plan available, and if so, your Coach walks you through switching online without a phone call
  • Then:Rebate check — which state and federal rebates apply to you, with claim steps and call scripts
  • Then:Billing review — any errors, estimated reads, or rate misapplications worth challenging
  • Then:Solar analysis — if you have panels, whether your feed-in tariff is competitive and whether battery storage stacks up
  • Then:Usage coaching — tariff-specific recommendations for cutting costs without changing your behaviour dramatically
  • Ongoing:Every quarter, your Coach is ready when your next bill arrives

How is this different from a comparison site?

Comparison sites show you a table of plans. Your Coach reads your actual bill and tells you what to do — then helps you do it.

Comparison sites earn a commission when you switch. Your Coach earns nothing from your choice of retailer. The only money that changes hands is the $29 you pay.

Comparison sites work best when switching is the answer. Your Coach works regardless — whether the right move is switching, staying, claiming a rebate, fixing a billing error, or writing a complaint.

Comparison sites are a one-time interaction. Your Coach is a relationship that compounds every quarter.

How it works — common questions

What if I can't switch retailers in my area?
Your Coach still works fully. Rebate screening, complaint drafting, solar analysis, and usage optimisation are all available regardless of your postcode. Switching is one tool — your Coach has several others.
How long does the Coach session take?
As long as you need. Most people work through their first session in 20–40 minutes. The Coach is available any time to pick up where you left off.
Is my bill data stored?
Your bill data is not stored after analysis. What the Coach remembers is the analysis output — your plan, rates, and key findings — not a copy of your original bill document.
Does the Coach work for business bills?
Yes. Business bills include demand charges and different rebate programs — the Coach handles them too. See the business page for details on what business analysis covers.

BillDecoder compares your bill against the AER reference price (the Default Market Offer) and against published plan data on energymadeeasy.gov.au — the Australian Government's free comparison tool.
